![]() ![]() There are a few different places where you can purchase a Founder’s Edition graphics card from NVIDIA. They might offer similar specs to a Reference Card from AMD (such as having similar graphics memory and GPU clock speeds), but they’re designed to compete with higher-end products rather than offer cost-effective ways to get a graphics card. In that year, they decided to step directly into the market and compete with their AIB partners, rather than just offer a more price friendly way for people to enter the graphics card market.įounders Edition GPUs compete directly with AIB partners. Reference Cards tend to deliver plenty of computing power, but, at a cost that is much more affordable than you get after those cards have been moved from AMD to one of their partners. Reference Cards have always given PC builders a way to enter the graphics card market without spending as much money as they would with an AIB. They act as a “reference” point for other GPUs using those same chips. They have standard specs, standard cooling, and typically take a no-frills approach to design. Reference Cards are standard issue GPUs from AMD, and formerly from NVIDIA. ![]() They take some graphics chips that perform exceptionally well and sell them on their own rather than with the help of their AIB partners, such as Sapphire:Ī Sapphire Pulse RX 6700 XT graphics card resting on an anti static bag When AMD or NVIDIA start to make a new graphics card, they go through the testing process mentioned above. Are Reference Cards Different From Founders Edition Cards?įounders Edition cards and Reference Cards have some similarities in their history, but are in fact completely different products today.īoth come from the same process. Chips are sorted into “bins” in a process known as “binning.” Chips that do well during this testing get set aside to be used in Founders Edition GPUs. Just Bin Itĭepending on where in the world you’re from, you might be surprised to hear that NVIDIA and AMD “bin” almost every graphics card they make!īin isn’t being used in the slang term meaning to throw away, but is actually a process of sorting cards based on how well they perform. It all depends on both the specs of the cards themselves and the PC that they will be installed into. In fact, a high-end AIB card might far surpass what a Founders Edition card is capable of. Future NVIDIA microarchitectures (e.g.Founders Edition cards aren’t always better than AIB cards.More information on GPUs supporting NVENCįor more information on GPUs supporting NVENC, see these Wikipedia pages: Three versions have the codename GK107(-301-A2) and one version has the codename GK208-400-A1 all these four graphic cards do support NVENC. One version has the codename GF116 and does not support NVENC. There are five versions/revisions of the GeForce GT 640.The GeForce GTX 670M has the codename GF114 and does not support NVENC.The GeForce GTX 660M has the codename GK107 and does support NVENC.In both cases, you will need to use the other elements of the comparison table in order to find out what is the right version/revision and the right codename of your graphic card. Other graphic cards may be listed only once but with several codenames (e.g. ![]() the "GeForce GT 640" is listed five times). Important note: some NVIDIA graphic cards exist in different versions or revisions and are listed more than once in the Wikipedia page above, either with the same or with different codenames (e.g. The above page also describes different models with their codenames as well as their supported encoding modes and features. If the codename of your graphic card begins with G K (Kepler microarchitecture), G M (Maxwell microarchitecture), or G P (Pascal microarchitecture), TU (Turing microarchitecture) then your graphic card does support NVENC if not, then your graphic card likely does not support NVENC.Go to this Wikipedia page, search for the exact name of your graphic card in the comparison tables and note the codename(s) of your graphic card:.Check what is the exact name of your graphic card, e.g.In order to find out if your NVIDIA GeForce graphic cards support NVENC technology, process as follow: Many NVIDIA GPUs support this technology, among others some GeForce GPUs used in desktop and mobile computers. NVENC is a technology used by NVIDIA that handles video hardware encoding. ![]()
